The annual Tulip Festival in Albany, NY every year is a perennial favorite among local residents. During the Tulip Festival every May, the Washington Park area turned into beautiful gardens and awe-inspiring as thousands of tulips made their debut. Food vendors fill the park and the residents of Albany to fill his own stomach, try a little of everything, a Greek souvlaki, a little funnel cakes, cheese fries, and maybe even a deep fried Oreos, or for truly adventurous, a fried pickle. Of course, there is also the coronation of Queen Tulip and the courts, and several musical performances by renowned national artists. In short, the Tulip Festival is a well-loved events, although without the knowledge of many native of Albany, was far more than an annual event. This is a Dutch tradition. Albany is America's oldest Dutch settlement, and thus, Albany has a long relationship with the Dutch. According to the Official Website of the City of Albany, the area was originally discovered by the Dutch in 1609 and settled as a trading post the Dutch West India Company. During the Dutch rule, Albany went by the name of different native and the Netherlands – the region known as the "Village Beverwyck." Not until the land in New York Dutch surrendered to the British that the name was changed to the village of Beverwyck namesake today: Albany. Albany is and has always been very proud of its Dutch heritage, and therefore, in the year 1948 and then mayor of Albany, Erastus Corning, choose tulips, traditional Dutch flowers, to become Albany's official flower. A year later, Mayor Corning creates Tulip Festival to further celebrate Albany's Dutch history. This festival is fun, but also reminded the Dutch of Albany founders and a strong history. One of the best, but often miss the attractions of the Tulip Festival is the street scrubbing on State Street. Residents should continue to celebrate the Tulip Festival through food, drinks and music, but also must remember to think about the Dutch history in the city, given that Albany is an old city with a strong cultural heritage.
