The economy.  It’s a hot topic whether it’s a boom year or a bust.  Every country on the planet has many forms of commerce that power its society.  To get a feel for the local economy you may need to do a bit of digging.  You can take a multilevel approach to capturing how your travel destination exchanges money and goods.  Start with where you are.  If it’s a tourist area the pickings will be easy; street carts, souvenir shops, fast food restaurants, people peddling their wares.  And if that’s where your comfort level ends, feel free to skip to one of the other travel photography subjects listed below.

If you’re feeling the need for more of the picture (pun intended), start expanding outwards beyond the area around your hotel.  Look for fueling stations and grocery stores and note prices.  Wander along busy streets get a feel for how much traffic is pedestrian and how much is commerce.  Is there a well organized goods distribution system with trains, cargo ships and freight trucks or are things more haphazard in a one-off fashion?  What kind of goods are being moved around the country?  Are they made local or imported?

Not satisfied with just wandering around and observing?  Find a local industrial area.  This can be a fishing marina, steel mills, textiles or any number of other operations available in the local community that produce goods or services.  It can also be the financial district of larger cities or technology, entertainment or dining enclaves.  You may need to be cautious around certain industrial areas (power plants and very private companies come to mind).

These are just a few of the possibilities when looking to document the economy of an area you may be visiting.  The list can go on and on, but the important aspect of this travel photography subject is to step outside your normal way of viewing a destination and scratch a little beneath the surface.  From prosperous to poverty stricken, a country’s economy will likely have a unique feel, even while it may be similar to its neighbor.  It may be subsisting upon mostly internal trade on scant natural resources, or it may be an exporting power house.

While you will most certainly have an active, if minor, role in the economy during your travels, take a step back and find a way to communicate with friends and family back home what drives your destination’s economy.  And then feel free to share what you have found in the comments section below

Newspaper Gets Around Photography Ban At Football Event With Cartoon Illustrations

from the don't-mess-with-reporters dept

We've covered a few different recent stories of various sports leagues or professional sports teams trying to limit how journalists and photographers can report on their games, and have even covered cheeky attempts to get around such restrictions by having reporters cover events from home while watching on TV. Now, a whole bunch of you have been sending in variations on a story in the UK, where the Southampton football team apparently has decided to ban photojournalists from taking images of matches, instead telling newspapers they need to buy photos from the team's “official” photographer.

Thankfully, some of the newspapers covering the latest match felt that was ridiculous, and chose to respond in some rather creative ways. The Plymouth Herald, who was covering the visiting team, decided to employ someone to draw cartoons of key moments in the match, rather than using the official photographs:

Perhaps even more amusing? Some reports point out that The Sun covered the game by carefully making sure to never mention Southampton or any of its players. Well played.

Every Latin Jazz scene has a group of musicians that serve as the rocks upon which the whole scene is built. These musicians often sit in the background of the bigger picture, rarely calling attention to themselves and preferring to support the scene’s well-known band leaders. While they almost always receive some sort of feature spot in concerts, for the most part, they remain in a supportive role. It’s never for a lack of musicianship; these individuals generally carry the largest musical tool bags that you’ll ever see. They simply prefer the job of the sideman, and they throw every bit of their energy into bringing their employers’ music come alive. Some musicians see this role as their calling in life, and they spend their whole career shaping the sound of their musical niche through work with a variety of artists. Other musicians reach a point where they want to make their own statements, and they want their own personalities to be in the spotlight. When these super sidemen become band leaders, exciting things almost inevitably occur, leading to years of musical sparks.

Paul and Marc van Wageningen – the VW Brothers – spent years supporting the best band leaders on the San Francisco Bay Area’s lively Latin Jazz scene, making the leap into the band leader role this year with their release Muziek. Born and raised in Amsterdam, both Paul and Marc found their way into music at an early age, Paul playing drums and Marc grabbing the bass. Eventually the brothers pushed their skills to a higher level, digging into studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. Inspired by the thrill of American jazz, Paul left Amsterdam in 1976 to find a place in the hot bed of jazz, New York City. He eventually made the cross country move out to the San Francisco Bay Area, encouraging his brother to join him in 1980. Both musicians quickly found ample work in the Bay Area, settling into a specialization in the region’s busy Afro-Cuban music scene. Paul became a valued member of percussionist John Santos’ Machete Ensemble, breaking new ground with the group’s smart combination of Afro-Cuban folklore, dance music, jazz, and contemporary ideas. Along the way, he also recorded with pianist Rebeca Mauleón, trombonist Wayne Wallace, flautist John Calloway, pianist Mark Levine, and many more. Marc moved in and out of the Latin music world, finding a long line of work with funk supergroup Tower Of Power, Latin Jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo, fusion keyboardist George Duke, and countless other artists. Both musicians became important pieces of Latin Jazz legend Pete Escovedo’s ensemble, recording on several of the percussionist’s recording and touring the world with his group. After years of sitting in the background Paul and Marc joined gathered a group of the Bay Area’s strongest musicians to record Muziek, the first recording to bear the name VW Brothers. The album highlights strong compositions from Marc, placing the brothers in a musical setting that smartly pulls together bits of Latin music, funk, fusion, and straight ahead jazz. As expected, after years of supporting world class musicians, the VW Brothers have plenty of musicality to spare, delivering an impressive project in their first outing as leaders.

The San Francisco Bay Area owes massive appreciation to all of the musical contributions from the VW Brothers over the years, with Muziek serving as another step in the right direction. The VW Brothers have taken their new music across the Bay Area this summer, performing in a number of venues with an outstanding group. LJC Correspondent Francis DeLeon caught the VW Brothers Quartet performing as part of the Stanford Jazz Workshop, giving us these fantastic pictures for today’s Latin Jazz Photo Album. The heart of the Bay Area Latin music scene lies with these guys, so check out their music – enjoy!

Friday Photo Critique is our weekly community project, where we publish a photograph submitted by one of our wonderful readers, then ask you all to offer constructive feedback on the image. It’s a great way to learn more about photography, express your viewpoint, and have your own image critiqued!

Quick Ground Rules

  1. Play nice! We’ve deliberately chosen photographs that aren’t perfect, so please be constructive with any criticism.
  2. Feel free to offer any type of advice – composition, lighting, post-processing etc.
  3. You can also link to photographs that you feel offer a great example of this type of image shot exceptionally well.

Without further ado, here is this week’s candidate for Friday Photo Critique!

The Photograph

If you’re like me, pretending you are someplace else is all part of the process of getting through the day. And today I’ve decided I want to be in France sipping coffee at a cute cafe, walking my adorable poodle, and ending the day by getting my photo taken with my mysterious French boyfriend. Well, thanks to La Photo Cabine, I can now pretend I’m in a French photo booth, when in reality I’m at the office on the computer, avoiding paperwork. And while my high school French may not get much further than an episode of Madeline, it’s enough to know that this website is tres chic.

Yesterday Apple announced a raft of new product. There are new all Core-i iMacs with ATI Radeon graphics processor units shipping immediately; new multi-core (up to 12) Mac Pros on the way for next month; a new freestanding Magic Trackpad that brings MacBook-style gestures to the desktop, but which will certainly be usable with notebooks as well as an alternative to a mouse when using your ‘Book in desktop mode. Then there’s a new, $999 27” LED Cinema Display with a built-in iSight video camera, microphone and speakers, a powered USB 2.0 hub, and a universal MagSafe connector that is being specifically pitched as “an ideal companion for the MacBook family” but wil also of course work with Mac desktop Computers. More prosaic is a new $29 Apple Battery Charger — a “green” device that Apple says has one of the lowest standby power usage values — or “vampire draw” — of similar chargers on the market that comes complete with six bundled AA size NiMH cells with a projected service life of up to 10 years.

So what inferences can Mac laptop fans draw from this relative tsunami of mostly not particularly laptop-oriented hardware? Actually quite a bit. An obvious one is that with the entire Mac desktop line from mini to Pro recently or about to be upgraded, notebooks are logically next in line for refreshment.

The switch to all Core-i and all-ATI CPUs and GPUs respectively in the iMacs, which have shared a fair bit of engineering with Apple’s laptops from the get-go in 1998, with the original teardrop G3 iMac and WallStreet PowerBooks, is especially intriguing. Intel’s lower power consumption Core i3 silicon makes its Mac debut with the July 2010 iMac revision, which inclines one to speculate that it probably won’t be long before there are Core i3 MacBooks as well. Less expected but not wholly surprising in light of the current politics in the graphics accelerator orbit is the wholesale shift away from NVIDIA GPUs and back to ATI Radeon 4000 or 5000 Series units with either 256 MB or 512 MB of dedicated video RAM, marking the first time since 2008 that iMac graphics have been all-ATI.

Apple’s notebook lines are currently all-NVIDIA graphics save for the Intel HD integrated GPUs used in Core-i5 and i7 15” and 17” MacBook Pros, which are piggy-backed with NVIDIA GeForce freestanding GPUs. The new MAc Pros coming in August will also ship with ATI graphics silicon, which will leave the Mac mini with its MacBook-esque internal architecture the last of the NVIDIA graphics Mohicans, at least for the present. This all begs the question of whether we will see a similar migration back to ATI with the next generation of MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

The new iMacs come with 3.06 and 3.20 GHz Intel Core i3 and 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processors with a 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor a build-to-order option. There has been speculation about quad-core MAcBook Pros being in the works, but we’ll have to wait and see. The Core-i processors feature an integrated memory controller that accesses the system memory directly, allowing full advantage to be taken of of the fast 1333 MHz memory (up from the 1066 MHz RAM in the foregoing models) that we should see in the next MacBook Pros at least.

Another new wrinkle introduced with these new iMacs that will probably make the jump to laptop space is an SD card slot that supports the SDXC format to handle the latest high-capacity storage cards. Notable by its absence, however, is USB 3.0, which is a bit of a disappointment, although the iMacs happily still come with a FireWire 800 port.

Externally, the new machines continue the now three-year-old aluminum iMac form factor unchanged, as is the standars 4 GB RAM configuration with a ceiling of 16 GB using four 4 GB modules.

iMac prices start at $1,199 for the 21.5” 3.06GHz Core i3 model ranging to $1,999 for the 27-inch 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 iMac, and on up with the i7 chip and other BTO options — arguably representing the most value for the money you can get in a Mac.

Apple’s new $69 wireless Magic Trackpad brings the intuitive Multi-Touch gestures of Mac notebook trackpads to the desktop. It’s very similar (only larger) to the glass Multi-Touch trackpads, with gesture support that enables users to scroll smoothly up and down a page with inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom in and out, rotate an image with their fingertips and swipe three fingers to flip through a collection of web pages or photos. The Magic Trackpad can be configured to support single button or two button commands and supports laptop-style tap-to-click as well as a physical click.

It’s nice to have this as an option, especially as a substitute for Apple’s Magic Mouse, since I find low-profile mice unsuitable for comfortable prolonged-session use I’ve had a freestanding trackpad for years — a superb Cirqué Easy Cat (which is not Multi-Touch), and as a laptop user I appreciate the virtues of the concept, but I’m not sure that even the coolness of Multi-Touch support would ever wean me off conventional mice for desktop duty. That’s of course a subjective evaluation, and I don’t doubt that the Magic Trackpad will be a hot seller, and that some folks will abandon the mouse in its favor. I can certainly see having both. I currently have three point & click input devices of various form factors connected to my MacBook as I type this column (on an external keyboard), and for one of them to be a MAgic Trackpad would make logical sense.

Moving along, the 24” Apple LED Cinema Display was originally introduced. on October 14, 2008 along with the aluminum unibody MAcBook and MacBook Pro, and expressly intended as a perfect companion for users who don’t have a desktop computer and use their laptops as the core module of their desktop work station. Now Apple has announced a larger 27-inch LED Cinema Display whose 16:9 ratio form factor and 2560 x 1440 resolution provides 60 percent more screen real estate than the 24-inch LED Cinema Display (which remains available for $200 less).

As noted above, the 27” LED Cinema Display also incorporates a built-in iSight video camera, microphone and speakers, an integrated MagSafe charger to keep Mac notebooks charged, built-in Mini DisplayPort connectivity for video and audio input, and a powered three-port USB 2.0 hub. It’s an edge-to-edge glass unit on an aluminum stand with an adjustable hinge that makes tilting the display easy.

The new LED Cinema Display also includes a new ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the display brightness based on external lighting conditions and uses only as much energy as necessary to provide optimum viewing. Made with mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and recyclable materials, the LED Cinema Display meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status, contains no brominated flame retardants, and all cables and components are PVC-free. The new LED Cinema Display will be available in September through the Apple Store Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $999.

The Mac Pro has the least engineering commonality with laptops of any Mac computer, so it’s not likely there will be much crossover with our ‘Books, but briefly, the new Pro desktops will be available with quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors running at speeds up to 3.33 GHz. These multi-core processors use a single die design so each core can share up to 12MB L3 cache to improve efficiency while increasing processing speed, and feature an integrated memory controller for faster memory bandwidth and reduced memory latency; Turbo Boost to dynamically boost processor speeds up to 3.6 GHz; and Hyper-Threading to create up to 24 virtual cores.

The Mac Pro comes with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor with 1GB of memory and customers can configure-to-order the faster ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of memory. Prices start at $2,499 and range to $3,499 for preconfigured models and beyond with a vast array of build-to-order options, and these new ones will be the fastest Macs ever built.

Finally, there’s the Apple Battery Charger, which Apple claims to have the lowest standby power usage values — or “vampire draw” — of similar chargers on the market, thanks to its ability to sense when the batteries are finished charging and automatically reduce the amount of power it consumes to 30 milliwatts. In addition, the reusable AA NiMH batteries that come bundled with each Apple Battery Charger are designed to maintain a high charge capacity for hundreds of charges, so you no longer have to buy new batteries or toss them every few months.

The Apple Battery Charger can recharge one or two batteries at a time, is optimized for Apple-supplied batteries and works with AA NiMH batteries from other vendors as well.

Each Apple Battery Charger comes with six high-performance AA NiMH batteries: two for your keyboard, two for your mouse or trackpad, and two for charging. These batteries are claimed to have an incredibly long service life — up to 10 years — and an extraordinarily low self-discharge rate, retaining 80 percent of their original charge after a year of not being recharged. The Charger’s compact shape should slip neatly in your laptop bag or backpack and is designed with a removable AC plug so you can substitute plugs that work with different outlets around the world.

The crazy land of Oz USA are living up to that named which i’ve just made up by launching some more potentially absurd lawsuits.

Today is Apple’s day in court as they are being charged because some people claim their iPad’s are over-heating or stops working in hot weather.

The allegations were put forward in the Oakland California Federal Court on the 23rd of July. The claims are put forward in the form of a class action suit and the full details are unknown.

The iPad has been one of Apples most successful products and has sold millions worldwide. This is the last thing Apple need especially after Antennagate, so we’ll see what Apple do, maybe they’ll offer some iPad bumpers?!

Sanyo Fisher Camcorder

from: Aidas Weblog
Angilias Blog

Today only, JR.com offers the Panasonic SDR-S26 SD Card Digital Camcorder in Black for $149. With free shipping, that’s $9 under our June mention and the lowest total price we’ve seen. (It’s also a current low by $71.) This camcorder features a 70x optical zoom, 2.7″ widescreen LCD, SDHC card slot, optical image stabilizer, face detection, digital still camera capability, night shot mode, and USB 2.0 connectivity.

I bought this several weeks ago when it was on sale. I am happy with it. The footage it produces is very good, the low light performance, while not great, is acceptable. It is very small and very easy to use, and the optical image stabilizer is fantastic.

Interchangeable Magnetic Photo Cube You Make in Minutes

⊆ Luglio 14th by slizwitv | ˜ No Comments »

I taken a lot of Pix in the last couple of months – please tell me your thoughts:

{Fotos als Poster preiswert entwickeln-

One hour photo processing is becoming more and more common to see. Some of the places that you will find it available are in your local pharmacies and drugstores. The ability to print out your digital photos in a one hour lab with the help of the internet is also becoming more common to be able to print your pictures at a lab from home. There are pharmacies that offer this on their website and here are a few of the pharmacies that do.

Walgreens

Walgreens offers you the ability to order prints online that can either be delivered to your home, or printed out at a local Walgreens that has a one hour photo. If you want to have your prints delivered to your home you can choose standard USPS, 2 days or overnight. The more prints that your order has will increase the cost of shipping, like the delivery speed you choose. Here are what the prices are to print your digital pictures out online with Walgreens.

4 x 6 (1+ prints): 19¢
5 x 7 (1 print): $1.59 (2+ prints): $1.00
8 x 10 (1 print): $2.99 (2+ prints) $2.50

Now the prices above do not include the cost of shipping if you choose the option to have them delivered to your house.

CVS

Another widely available drugstore that offers one hour photo services online is CVS Pharmacy, Consumer Value Stores. CVS Pharmacy also offers standard USPS, 2 day express and next day express for delivery options for shipping your prints to your home. Here are the prices of the prints from CVS Pharmacy.

4×6 Print (One Hour): $0.19 (1-2 Business Days): $0.10
5×7 Print: $1.49
8×10 Print: $3.99

Keep in mind that these prices do not include shipping and that orders that are received by 3:00 PM Saturday through Thursday are for 1-2 day service. Friday orders are 2-3 day serve and pickup times will vary by store.

Rite Aid

The drugstore Rite Aid is another pharmacy that offers a one hour photo service online but does not offer the option of shipping your digital prints to your home. Once your order is placed your prints will be ready at your local Rite Aid, with in the restrictions of the one hour photo center within the Rite Aid. 4 x 6 prints are 19¢ each.

Savon Drugs

Savon Drugs offers a standard delivery, about 3 to 5 days, option and an express delivery, 1 to 2 days, option if you would like your prints to be delivered to your home. There are three delivery speed options that Savor Drugs offers. The cheapest is 3 to 10 business days after processing, second cheapest 2 business days after processing and most costly 1 business day.

4 x 6: $0.15
5 x 7: $0.99
8 x 10: $3.99

These figures do not include the cost of shipping and since Savon Drugs uses a third party they can not guarantee that the prices will be exact for the orders that are 1 hour and picked up at your local Savon Drugs.

Depending on where you live and which of these pharmacies you use will play into which you decide to have your prints developed at.

In this clip from CNN, underwater photographer Gavin Newman heads out to sea with Greenpeace aboard their vessel, Esperanza.

Known for his cave and cave diving photography, on this adventure Newman takes to the Arctic, exploring the mysterious sea bed–now accessible below melting ice–with robotic underwater cameras that he has built. Newman discusses the wonder and excitement of exploring this new frontier, “Nobody has any idea what's below us.”

Expecting sights little more exciting than sand and mud, everyone was shocked to find a stunningly colorful ecosystem of living creatures on the Arctic seabed. Newman describes it as “one of the most colorful places I've dived,” going on to say, “It really is very unexpected.”

Newman also talks about the horrors of bottom trawling, a destructive fishing method now making its way to this untouched location due to the melting ice. “It's like somebody's just plowed a field,” Newman says, describing the areas where rich coral systems and seabed life are ripped entirely off the ocean floor.

Published: July 13, 2010

Celebrated photographer and Statesville native Max Tharpe died Saturday at his home in Florida.
Tharpe, 90, became noted for a voluminous body of photography that captured everyday life in what has often been described as the simpler times of the post-war 1940s and 1950s.
Some of that work was put on display during an exhibit at the Iredell Museums Gallery in Statesville in late 2008 through early 2009.
Museums Director Theresa Golas said the Tharpe exhibit was the “most well received” in the museum's history.
“It was probably our most ambitious project,” Golas added. “And our first community-currated exhibit.”
Tharpe attended the exhibit and it was one of the last times he was in the city of his birth.
Golas, who did untold hours of research in advance of the exhibit, said got she great glimpse of Tharpe by dealing with his work.
“I knew Max only briefly,” she said. “But I really felt like I got to know him through his images.”
Some 200 images were used during the exhibit, which would attract more than 2,000 visitors during its run.
Among Tharpe's better-known works was a photo of Annie Laurie Walsh holding her newly earned Mitchell Community College diploma.
“Me and a friend of mine were sitting up there at Mitchell and we had just kicked our shoes off when we saw Max come by,” Walsh recalled. “We said, 'Max please take our picture.' And he did and it ended up on the cover of an education booklet. And that must have been a long time ago, because I'm 82 now.”
Walsh said Tharpe was “a wonderful person. He was always easy-going and had a kind word to say. And he took such great pictures.”
Joel Reese, the local historian for the Iredell County Public Library, said those “pictures” are an ever more important record of Statesville and western North Carolina.
“When I actually got news of Max Tharpe's death there, at the very time, there were two people going through Max Tharpe's photography in the research room,” Reese said. “And you will always find people looking through the photos we have here.”
Reese told the story of one woman who going through the library's Tharpe collection as part of work she was doing on a Barium Springs reunion.
The woman had been placed in the facility at a young age and raised there with with her sister as orphans.
“When I saw her, she was crying and I asked her why,” Reese said. The woman showed Reese the photo she had been studying. It was of her sister, who died in an accident not long after that.
“This was the only photograph that woman had seen of her sister,” Reese said.
But even beyond such emotional anecdotes, Reese said Tharpe's great number of photographs captured an entire era of this part of the nation.
“The (photos) become more significant as the years go by,” Reese said. “Because they show what it was like then in a lot of different ways.”
Walsh said something very similar.
“His pictures were just always able to appeal to you,” she said. “They just showed who we were and told so much about our country. They were just so, I don't know, American.”
Funeral services for Tharpe will be held Friday at the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel in Statesville. Graveside services will follow at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Harmony.
